These are live recordings of electric lute, in improvised performances recorded on location. The electric lute is a prototype musical instrument, designed by Dimitris Sideris and built in collaboration with Yannis Levendakis, deriving from the traditional lute of Crete. Being electrified with a solid body and keeping characteristics of its acoustic ancestor, a new sound is produced, through pedal effects and a tube amp. Right from the conception of the initial idea there was the notion that the recording studio won't be the most effective environment for the development of the project. In the process of exploring this new sound, 4 unique locations: a Venecian vaulted chamber, a deserted half built amphitheater and 2 old tannery factories, were chosen on the belief that their past life would inspire the performance and intrigue it in a creative way. These different architectural structures set limits but at the same time offer the necessary freedom for a non-preconceived composition. The goal was to create and record a soundscape being encapsulated within each location. Our effort was also filmed by BeforeSOUND | filming reality, in order to make a documentary film about this innovation.
